1800 Clybourn
The dramatic renovation of nine connected heavy timber industrial loft buildings into a unique shopping, dining and entertainment mall in the Clybourn Corridor retail district; 220,000 square feet of space on four levels.
A unique group of tenants were complemented by exciting architectural design, expansive atriums and public areas, plenty of parking, and an exciting array of special events and programs. Big bold architectural shapes and patterns played counterpoint to the heavy timber loft structure. The context was industrial and the effect was pure theater.
The floor plan was basic; two grand courts connected by a rooftop avenue - all under skylights. Simple layout, open access, rich variety and careful detail. The North Court was highlighted by big sweeping arches with a tracery of ivy which framed two levels of expansive storefronts around a spacious gallery.
The cantilevered central stairs led to a cupola covered crossroads above. Serpentine concrete ramps wound upwards above the elegant descending semicircular thrust of terrazzo stairs.
Completed in 1989.
